2025 Honouree: Nana McLean - The Queen of Reggae History

The Legacy

Nana McLean isn’t just a singer; she is the heartbeat of Canadian Reggae history. From the moment she stepped into the legendary Studio One in Jamaica to her crowning as a Juno Award winner, Nana has bridged the gap between the roots of Kingston and the stages of Toronto.

She doesn’t just perform a song; she inhabits it. Whether she is delivering a lovers’ rock ballad or a powerful gospel-infused anthem, her voice carries the weight of a thousand stories and the grace of a true queen.

The Milestones

The Studio One Era: One of the elite few female artists to record under the tutelage of Clement “Coxsone” Dodd, cementing her place in the foundation of the genre.

Juno Dominance: A multi-time nominee and winner, proving that Reggae has a permanent seat at the table of Canadian musical excellence.

Global Ambassador: From Japan to the UK, Nana has spent four decades ensuring that the “North” is respected on the global Reggae map.

The Iconic Sound

“Dream of Me” (1997) This track didn’t just top charts; it defined an era of lovers’ rock in Canada. Nana’s effortless vocal range on this record remains the gold standard for aspiring vocalists today.

2025 Honouree: Carl 'Grandmaster Rosa' Rosegreen - The Architect of the Dance

“He didn’t just play the music; he built the house where it lives.”

The Legacy

Before there were digital playlists or streaming giants, there was the Sound System. And in the North, there was Grandmaster Rosa. As the mastermind behind the legendary Grandmaster Sound, Rosa did more than spin records; he engineered a movement. He was the first to prove that Canadian reggae could rumble with the same intensity, clarity, and “weight” as the sound systems of Jamaica.

Rosa is the bridge between the technical and the soulful. His mastery of frequency and his ear for “the next big hit” made Grandmaster a household name and a rite of passage for every reggae fan in the country.

The Milestones

The Sound System Blueprint: Established the standard for “Heavyweight Audio” in Canada, importing the culture of custom-built speakers and exclusive dubplates.

The Curator of Vibes: Known for his “Juggling” style, Rosa broke records that would eventually become national anthems, acting as the primary tastemaker for the Diaspora.

The Mentor: Beyond the speakers, Rosa served as a consultant for dozens of rising DJs, ensuring the “Art of the Sound” was passed down to the next generation.

The Signature Vibe

“The Grandmaster Experience” It wasn’t just about a single track; it was about the ‘set.’ Rosa’s ability to read a crowd and build tension through a night is legendary. To hear a Grandmaster set was to understand the true power of Reggae as a communal force.

“Sixty years of music. One timeless soul.”

Since migrating to Canada in 1975, he has been the consistent North Star for the community. With a career spanning over 60 years and 10 Canadian Reggae Music Awards, Jimmy is the “Singer’s Singer,” known for a vocal delivery so smooth it has earned him the nickname of the Diamond of Lovers Rock.
